KoverRoos to Support STEM Nonprofit Code2College

AUSTIN, TX - KoverRoos has committed to donating 10% of July website sales to Code2College, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to dramatically increasing the number of minority and low-income high school students who enter and excel in STEM undergraduate majors and careers.”
While KoverRoos’ sustainability efforts have largely been devoted to addressing the environmental pillar of sustainability, we realized recently the social and economic piece was being overlooked. Thus, we have made the decision to diversify our sustainability efforts in accordance with our company values. KoverRoos’ commitment to social and economic equality is absolute.
Technology is integral to so many industries, and the Casual Furniture Industry is no exception. Although traditional outdoor furniture retailers have always excelled by providing a tactile and in person experience, the movement towards e-commerce has been essential, especially in the environment of COVID-19.
We depend on tech professionals to power e-commerce. Except the STEM field is not a level playing field. According to Code2College, underrepresented groups who initially declare a STEM field when entering college, exit those fields in droves (either by switching to a non-STEM major or dropping out of college altogether):
We feel it is important to raise awareness and support Code2College because they address the opportunities and skills gap minority and low-income students face in the STEM field by empowering the students themselves. 76% of the students they serve are black or LatinX, and 53% are female. Since launching in 2016, they have already served 1,041 students.
Code2College’s all encompassing model includes after school coding sessions, technical portfolio development, monthly professional development workshops, and summer internships.
